Blend, Polish, and Peen Turbine Maintenance

In order to meet the supplemental maintenance recommendations for the F-Class turbine rotors IAW TIL 1543-2, Advanced Turbine Support has worked with PSM to develop and deliver a blend, polish, peening (BPP) turbine maintenance service that can be implemented in the field and shop environments. This process can be performed on any cooling slot profile to provide an optimal edge condition to minimize the risk and initiation of cracking in the Inconel turbine wheels. Advance Turbine Support recommends performing this service on the cooling slots of both the first and second stage turbine wheels to minimize the sensitivity in this high nickel alloy to surface imperfections.

Blending is performed in a two-step process which first provides an optimal edge radius to minimize stress risers in the area of interest, and then removes any machining/tooling marks to ensure a continuous smooth surface is present.  The polish steps next ensure that the surface is brought to a mirror-like appearance to take full advantage of the compressional forces applied during the peening process.

The peening process is performed using the latest technology and advanced equipment utilizing a flapper peening technique.  The intensity of the flapper peening is performed to the engineering supplied values and the surface is reviewed under magnification to ensure 100% coverage was obtained.

Prior to performing the BPP process, the dovetail slots are inspected via eddy current array and fluorescent penetrant inspections to make sure no detrimental defects are present. A post BPP Fluorescent Penetrant Inspection is performed to document that no subsurface indications were opened during the blending and polishing processes.
